Global Student Mobility Trends:

Focus on Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan,

and South Korea

Ning, L. (2017, August 16).  Global student mobility trends: Focus on Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, and South Korea . Wes.Org. https://wenr.wes.org/2017/08/global-mobility-japan-malaysia-taiwan-and-south-korea-seek-to-shift-student-mobility-by-2025

Historically Asia has faced a student mobility deficit. As of 2015 Asian countries sent estimated 2.3 million degree

seeking students abroad but only attracted 928,977 in return based on UIS Statistics. In recent years Asian countries are trying to transform themselves from being pure senders in order to strike a balance between outbound and

inbound student mobility and become some of the top education destinations. China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea,

and Malaysia are the countries focused on in the article. They have set explicit goals for dramatically increasing

international recruitment between the years 2020 and 2025. If they succeed, 1.4 million international students will,

within less than a decade circulate intra- regionally rather than globally. These strategies are primarily intra- regional which is important from both the Asian and Western standpoint. This article takes a look at each country and

examines the trends
